There’s a lot of debate about which pig is the ultimate homestead pig. In this post (and podcast), we’re sharing why we think Kunkune pigs are the best fit for our homestead and family and why you may want to consider raising this breed.
I have 6 Kunekune piglets for sale, Excellent Lard Pigs, $250.00 each.
What is lard in pigs?
Lard is a semi-solid white fat product obtained by rendering the fatty tissue of a pig. It is distinguished from tallow, a similar product derived from fat of cattle or sheep.
Good Temperament. The pig's breed and size are very important considerations when raising pigs with children. We love raising Kune Kune pigs because they're extremely friendly.
What is the lifespan of a Kunekune pig?
It is, in fact, illegal, and they need outside space. You can expect your Kunekune pigs to live for up to 15 years. At the time of writing, the oldest known Kunekune is 21 years of age! They vary in size from 60cm to 77cm (24″ to 30″) high at the shoulder and weigh between 64 kg – 100kg (140-220 lbs.).
Part of what makes kunes uniquely excellent on pasture is that their shorter upturned noses are perfectly angled for grazing but not for rooting up the soil like pretty much all other pigs do.
I have raised 20-30 piglets on 2 acers and its still beautiful pasture, they graze like cows, But take 12-14 months to mature. ( Hence they are not stuffed with soy, wheat and corn! Allergens )
